Who Is The Person? May 10, 2008

I’ve been chewing on this. Do give it some thought.
Who is the person you would share your sorrows with?
The friend you are closest to? The one whom you meet up the most frequently? The one who listens to you the most?
For me, I would pick the friend I’m most comfortable with…
Then the second question:
Who is the person you would share your joy with, first?
Generally, we would love to share our joy with everyone; the people whom we see, whoever that cross our path while we receive the joyous news. Hence I added the word “first”. When you know you aced your national exams, received an award or won a medal, who is the first person you would dial on your mobile phone to share the news with? That person would be different from the rest.
I think I would share it to the person that will rejoice with me the most…

I pray this makes you more aware of those who are important to you.

There are instances where being vocal and proactive has nothing to do with personality. Even the most phlegmatic person would voice out his hunger. Hence, the deciding factor is not personality, but desire.
Main Entry: desire
Definition: want
Synonyms: admiration, ambition, appetite, ardor, aspiration, attraction, avidity, concupiscence, covetousness, craving, craze, cupidity, devotion, doting, eagerness, fancy, fascination, fervor, fondness, frenzy, greed, hunger, inclination, infatuation, lasciviousness, lechery, libido, liking, longing, love, lust, mania, motive, need, passion, predilection, proclivity, propensity, rapaciousness, rapture, ravenousness, relish, salacity, solicitude, thirst, urge, voracity, will, wish, yearning

“If a wounded Greek soldier had not run 42.195km to pass on a message of victory in battle, perhaps the marathon might never have existed as the ultimate long-distance run.”
Yesterday, I finished the 42.195Km with Shirley in 8hrs 1min. I never knew that even walking could be that painful. They say that marathons are all about your level of perseverance. That’s garbage.
It is all about the company.
Can you imagine spending 8hrs of your day running alone? Perhaps even the Kenyans dreads that, that is why they sprint finish the marathon in a mere 2hrs and 14mins to reunite with their friends. That’s some crazy strategy eh?
Our Christian walk shares certain similarities. Unfortunately, we are unable to pick the distance we run; it’s normally a very long race. Neither can we pick our finishing timings; it never seems to end. What running techniques can you employ, or what running shoes can you buy to guarantee your place at the finishing line?
Fortunately, for distances where skills and equipment falter, we have something better; we can pick our company. So watch who you surround yourselves with. They determine where I see you; in heaven or hell.
For short distances, pick your shoes carefully.
For long distances, pick your company correctly.

1. I had a dream this morning
2. I enjoyed the dream.
3. However, that does not make it a good dream.
In the dream, I was so happy that even asked my friend who was inside, “Is this a dream?” Since only alert and fully awake people can pinch themselves and/or ask such questions, I took it to be reality.
The consequence? Extreme disappointment.
In fact, I wasn’t even sure which realm I had awakened into.
Sometimes, I’m not even sure which is the nightmare:
A bad dream that you can’t seem to wake up from,
or a good dream you can’t seem to stay asleep in.

It’s never about the food; it’s all about the company you eat with.

I rather eat vegetables with friends I love, than steak at the table of strangers.
Even the dessert tastes sweeter this way.
Meal times are generally too short with friends and too long with strangers.
I finally understand all that hype about the Holy Communion - God wants to be our friend.

The last question in his book - “Do you think you will go to heaven?”
“So, as for heaven, who knows? I’m sure not perfect, but if there are any points given out for caring about people with every fiber of your being and giving life all you’ve got every day, then I suppose I have a shot.”
- His reply, after a few second of stunned silence
The last chapter of his book - Acknowledgments
Business is about people. In fact, life is only people - family, friends, colleagues, bosses, teachers, coaches, neighbors. At the end of the day, it is only people that matter.
People made this book. First, there were the thousands of men and women around the world who, as my dedication says, cared about business enough to raise their hands and ask the questions that fill these pages. I thank them for candidly sharing their stories, talking openly about the ever-changing challenges of work, and for helping me codify my thinking about how to get it right.
The CEO of General Electric wasn’t sure of his eternal destination, yet he was already certain of the importance of people. Speaks volumes doesn’t it?
