Objectivity was never dependent on majority.
Today I was thinking about the twelve spies that Moses send to explore Canaan. We know how all but two of them came back with less than favorable reports. I couldn’t help but wonder, if we were Moses, how would we have reacted?
Of course, knowing how the story ended, we may be quick to dismiss the other ten of little faith and only Joshua and Caleb truly trusted God. However, if we were placed at that exact crossroad of decision-making, who would we have trusted?
Would we have stuck to our guns, believing that God has given us the land, or would we have asked for a “re-evaluation”, called for another exploration trip and allowing “common sense” to prevail? Mind you, it wasn’t the case that Joshua and Caleb’s opinions were obviously more valuable. If we were to comb through the passage, we would notice that ALL twelve of them were leaders in their respective tribe.
Imagine this – Would you be…
Taking the opinion of 2 unit leaders or 10 other unit leaders?
Heeding the advice of 2 pastors, or 10 other pastors?
Would we have flowed with the ten, heeding the “wise counsel” of the majority while dismissing the other two radicals as overly optimistic and blindly naive? We might even affirm them for their enthusiastic but “unrefined” passion!
In a world that is so accustomed to the concept of democracy, such things are less foreign than it seems.
What scares me the most is that I can totally imagine that happening to myself!
when youre a dreamer, your rules and others’ rules dont align ainnit? because they go by logic whereas you would go by possibilities.
like entrepreneurs. they see the gaps, and they seize opportunities where most dare not enter.
work towards that boy!
Dear Zachary,
I’m very encouraged by your passion and your great commitment to your local church in leading Central… Having the talk with you an Jon Tay last week was certainly nice for me to get to know much more clearly in what angle we view God and his word.
As I look through your blog, I stumble across this post and now, i would like to ask you if you could take some time to think through some things which we talked about last week.
“Objectivity was never dependent on majority.” – However, both you and Jon Tay made the remark “Are you saying that 90% of Christianity is practicing the wrong thing” and I said YES. This is something which I feel was apt to bring up.
Are you content in being part of the majority? Do you feel safe in being part of the majority? Are you shutting off the minority to feel comfortable with the majority?
I quoted these verses… Matthew 7:22-23 Matthew 7:22-24 (King James Version)
Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
I focused upon the Word MANY. and Jon said it refers to the Roman Catholic Church. I beg to differ because it is not according to context. The Roman Catholic Church casts out demons not only in the name of Jesus, but of Mary too. The roman church doesn’t prophesy in the name of Christ but under the papacy. Their priests interpret scripture for the layperson and they perform works to gain merit. By the deeds of the roman Catholic church, they exposed themselves immediately as false believers, there is no doubt about that… In the context, it speaks of those that are decieving themselves, thinking that they are saved when they are not. These are people who have been actively serving and working in God’s name. only to find it all in vain when Christ casts them away… MANY christians, will be cast away. Not catholics, not buddhists, not muslims… MANY Christians. And when you and Jon tay talk about the majority, who is in the 90% you guys mentioned?
Matthew 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
MANY enter the gate that lead to destruction, and MANY of which are christians…. Think about that… In no why have I condemned any church to hell… But I only warn of the dangers of false doctrines that are contrary to scripture. Disobedience is as sinful as witchcraft which is an abomination, which is detested by God.
1 Samuel 15:23
For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.
Saul was rejected, and he was cast away for his disobediece to God even though he meant to save the best of the spoils to sacrifice for God.
1 Samuel 15:22
And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
Is God as pleased with christians Working their entire lives doing and doing and doing endless good deeds for God, or than an obedience Child who heeds the commandments of his Father? God is more pleased with obedience than works… cause anything done in disobedience to God’s word, never EVER will please him. They are unrighteous, filthy and disgusting in the sight of God…
Many Christians as you guys say. 90%, are similar in doctrine, and focus on the task the church has been set, to save souls… But me, by encouraging obedience to God’s Word, I hinder the “kingdom”? Why would you say that? Are these 90% saved? Are this 90% obedient?
Titus 1:16
They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient,
Let us reason together… Let us look at scripture from ONE STANDARD alone.. with only perspective… With only 1 interpretation. The interpretation that God wants us to have. Which can be known by comparing scripture with scripture….
It is useless to be in a mega church or to have many followers if they are disobedient to the Word of God. Christ did not suffer so much pain and die just so that we can go around making disobedience disciples that obey not the Word of God. He did not create us to SAVE others… He ALONE is the one saving. He SAVED us to Glorify him with our obedience in our lives… The MAIN DUTY, is not to save souls… as i mentioned a million times that morning… MAIN PURPOSE of the church isn’t to save souls, but to Fear God and keep his commandments.
Ecclesiastes 12:13
Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
Notice that this is the WHOLE duty, not PART of the duty… Part of the duty is to witness to others, and preach the gospel to every creature. I applaude your efforts to do so, but… this is just part of the duty which we are to keep… the WHOLE duty is 1stly OBEDIENCE to the word..
Can we discuss certain issues in a nice manner now? Many are deceived. Many are wrong, Many are doing the wrong things…. Who’s side are you on? Obey or Disobey? Obey fully or Obey partially? Majority or Minority? Lets talk about this shall we? I truly care about every one of you as Brothers in Christ. Don’t turn me away…
In Christ’s Love,
Luke
Hi Luke,
It is true that majority may not always be right, but they aren’t always wrong as well.
In matters of doctrine, I would be very careful to be standing on the side of the minority – You would either be Martin Luther, or the next Joseph Smith (Founder of the Latter Day Saints Movement)
As I have mentioned, I would not be engaging in any doctrinal debates unless our core cardinal doctrines are very different. I think that there’s too many lost people out there in the world for Christian denominations to be arguing about these petty peripherals. If Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior and you have been saved by faith and faith alone, I would like to believe that we are both serving under the same name.
That would be enough for me.
As both of us have admitted, none of us hold all the answers and have completely understood everything about the bible. As such, I would be much more careful to go around convincing people of my stands when it is not finalized yet, lest I find myself having to re-convince them again. Just some food for thought for you. =)
